The Independent Art Fair | NYC
The Independent Art Fair was founded in 2010 and each year has set up camp at the Dia Center for the Arts on West 22nd Street in Chelsea during Armory Arts Week in New York. The fair was conceived by Elizabeth Dee and Darren Flook and developed in conjunction with creative director Matthew Higgs and director Laura Mitterrand. Although it tries hard not to look and act like your typical art fair, exhibiting galleries like Gagosian, David Zwirner, Gladstone, Metro Pictures and others make it clear that this is very much about art as big business.
While there is always something that catches my eye, some of the works take more energy to engage with than I’ve got left after attending The Armory Show and other significant fairs. Or, I simply run out of time to contemplate at length, the depth of what some works pry at, while others can feel like an utter waste of time, depending on the lens one views contemporary art through.
